12.1 Minimum Numbers
A minimum of two (2) adults is required to book and take part in canoe, kayak, or paddleboard hire. Solo hire is not permitted.
12.2 Minimum Booking Age
All bookings for equipment hire must be made by a person aged eighteen (18) years or over.
12.3 Minimum Participant Age
The minimum age for kayak and paddleboard hire is fourteen (14) years, and participants under eighteen (18) years must be accompanied by a responsible adult aged eighteen (18) years or over.
12.4 Experience Requirements
All participants must have some prior experience and basic competence in paddling a canoe or kayak before placing a booking. Black Mountain Activities Ltd reserves the right to refuse hire where participants are deemed to lack sufficient experience for the prevailing conditions.
12.5 Risk Acknowledgement
Canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding involve inherent risks, including but not limited to personal injury, capsize, exposure to cold water (and associated effects such as hypothermia), entrapment, and drowning.
By agreeing to these Terms and Conditions and signing the Hire Agreement, all participants acknowledge and accept these risks and agree to take responsibility for their own actions while on hire.
12.6 Slips, Trips and Falls
Canoe, kayak, and paddleboard hire takes place on and around water where surfaces may be wet and slippery at all times. This increases the risk of slips, trips, and falls, particularly when entering or exiting the water and when mounting or dismounting equipment.
Participants are advised to prepare appropriately and to follow the clothing and footwear recommendations provided on our website.
12.7 Water Confidence
All participants must be able to swim and be confident in open water.
12.8 Health and Fitness
Canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding can be physically demanding. Participants must be of reasonable health and fitness and capable of safely operating the equipment.
If you or any member of your group has a medical condition that may affect participation—such as, but not limited to, broken bones or dislocations, heart conditions, epilepsy, high blood pressure, or pregnancy—you are strongly advised to seek medical advice prior to booking and to inform us as soon as reasonably possible. All medical information provided will be treated as confidential.
12.9 Medication
Any participant taking prescribed medication that may affect their ability to paddle safely must seek advice from their GP prior to hire and notify the Centre in advance.
12.10 Participants Aged 65 and Over
Participants aged sixty-five (65) years and over should be physically fit and active and are strongly advised to seek medical advice from their GP prior to participation.
12.11 Alcohol and Drugs
Black Mountain Activities Ltd and Canoe Hire Wales operate a strict no alcohol and drugs policy. Any participant found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or in possession of illegal substances, will be refused hire and required to leave the site immediately. No refund will be issued in such circumstances.
12.12 Loss or Damage to Equipment
Participants are fully responsible for all equipment hired to them and will be liable for the full replacement cost of any equipment lost or damaged during the hire period, whether caused by their own actions or those of others.
12.13 Conduct and Trespass
Participants accept responsibility for their behaviour while on hire, including avoiding trespass, antisocial behaviour, or conduct likely to bring the activity or location into disrepute. Black Mountain Activities Ltd accepts no liability for misconduct by participants.
12.14 Rubbish and Environmental Responsibility
Participants are responsible for ensuring that all litter and rubbish is stored securely during the activity and disposed of appropriately upon return. No rubbish is to be left on riverbanks, waterways, or surrounding areas.
12.15 Late Returns
It is the responsibility of the hirer to return equipment and be off the water at the agreed location and time. Late returns will incur a charge of £5.00 per item for every fifteen (15) minutes beyond the agreed return time.
12.16 Weight Restrictions
For safety and equipment limitations, sit-on-top kayaks have a maximum weight limit of 140kg (22 stone). Participants exceeding this limit must contact the Centre prior to booking. Black Mountain Activities Ltd reserves the right to refuse hire where weight limits are exceeded.
12.17 Mobile Communication
All hire groups must carry at least one mobile phone for emergency contact purposes. Black Mountain Activities Ltd cannot be held responsible for limitations in mobile network coverage within the activity area.
12.18 Responsibility and Documentation
The booking organiser is responsible for ensuring that all participants are aware of and agree to these Terms and Conditions.
All participants taking part in canoe, kayak, paddleboard, or bicycle hire must complete and submit a Hire Agreement Waiver prior to participation. Where a participant is under eighteen (18) years of age, the waiver must be signed by a responsible adult.
12.19 Personal Belongings
Black Mountain Activities Ltd accepts no responsibility for loss of or damage to personal belongings or personal equipment brought onto the site or used during hire.
12.20 Adult-to-Child Ratios
All hire services operate under strict adult-to-child ratio requirements. It is the responsibility of the booking organiser to ensure that the correct ratios of competent adults to children under sixteen (16) years of age are met both at the time of booking and on the day of hire.
