We offer half-day and full-day canoe and kayak hire, giving you the flexibility to plan your own adventure along this scenic and historic canal.
🌿 Your Canoe Hire Experience
Our fleet includes a range of craft to suit different group sizes and preferences, including:
- 2-seater canoes
- 3-seater canoes (Canadian canoes)
- Single sit-on-top kayaks
- Tandem sit-on-top kayaks
The Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal offers calm, sheltered waters, making it ideal for a relaxed and enjoyable paddling experience. As you make your way along the canal, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful countryside, with views of the Brecon Beacons and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife.
Unlike river trips, there’s no current to carry you along, so you can paddle at your own pace, turn around whenever you like, and fully enjoy the journey.

If you have little or no paddling experience, or are looking for a more structured and supportive experience, take a look at our Guided Canoe Adventures. These instructor-led sessions are perfect for beginners, families with young children, and anyone wanting to build confidence while having fun on the water.
🗺️ Canoe Hire Routes
We offer two scenic routes along the Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal, starting from the basin near Brecon Theatre, as shown below. Both options allow you to paddle at your own pace and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the canal.
Please be aware: Both the Half Day and Full Day routes require paddlers to portage their canoe or kayak around a lock during the journey. This involves leaving the water and moving your craft around the lock before continuing your trip.
🕒 Half-Day Hire
Route: Brecon Basin → Storehouse Bridge
Duration: 2–3 hours
Distance: Approx. 4 miles
Price: From £35 per person
Hire Times (arrival to collection)
- Morning: 9:15am to 12:00pm
- Afternoon: 1:15pm to 4:00pm
A relaxed paddle ideal for beginners and families. Enjoy a gentle journey along the canal with plenty of time to take in the scenery.

Route: Brecon Basin → Talybont-on-Usk
Duration: 5–6 hours
Distance: Approx. 8 miles
Price: From £55 per person
Hire Time:
9:15am to 4:00pm (arrival to collection)
A longer adventure for those wanting to explore further along the canal. Stop at Pencelli halfway for a break — perfect for a pub lunch or a picnic — before continuing on to Talybont-on-Usk.
⚠️ Important Information
- A minimum of 2 people is required per booking
- Minimum age to make a booking: 18 years
- The correct adult-to-child ratios must be followed
- Customers should be comfortable undertaking a short portage and assisting with moving their boat where required. Consider this if hiring with children.
- If you are booking with children under 12 years old, a minimum of 2 adults is required for safety and to manage the carrying of boats around the lock.
* If you are planning to paddle with children, please ensure you are confident in your ability to manage their safety on the water. See the adult-to-child ratio section for full details.
Guided canoe trips are also available and may be a more suitable option for families with young children or less experienced paddlers.
👨👩👧 Adult-to-Child Ratios
Minimum age for canoe hire: 8 years
Minimum age for sit-on-top kayak hire: 12 years
To ensure the safety of all participants, the following ratios apply:
- Must paddle in the same canoe as a responsible adult.
- Minimum of 2 adults per booking.
- Be aware there is a lock portage on the route, where boats must be lifted and carried around the lock.
- May paddle in a separate canoe or kayak.
- Must be accompanied by a responsible adult on the water.
- May paddle independently as part of a supervised group.
- At least one responsible adult (18+) must be present and participating in the activity.
When booking with children, please ensure you are confident in your ability to supervise them both on the water and during the lock portage. If you are unsure whether your group meets the required ratios, please contact us before booking and we will be happy to advise.

Canoe and kayak hire is available as either a half-day or full-day session. The times for each hire slot are listed below. Please note that these times include check-in, equipment fitting, and transport to and from the canal.
