The Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal offers calm, sheltered waters, making it ideal for a relaxed and enjoyable paddling experience. As you make your way along the canal, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful countryside, with views of the Brecon Beacons and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife.

Unlike river trips, there’s no current to carry you along, so you can paddle at your own pace, turn around whenever you like, and fully enjoy the journey.

These instructor-led sessions are perfect for beginners, families with young children, and anyone wanting to build confidence while having fun on the water.

🗺️ Canoe Hire Routes

We offer two scenic routes along the Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal, starting from the basin near Brecon Theatre, as shown below. Both options allow you to paddle at your own pace and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the canal.

Please be aware: Both the Half Day and Full Day routes require paddlers to portage their canoe or kayak around a lock during the journey. This involves leaving the water and moving your craft around the lock before continuing your trip.

🕒 Half-Day Hire

Route: Brecon Basin → Storehouse Bridge
Duration: 2–3 hours
Distance: Approx. 4 miles
Price: From £35 per person

Hire Times (arrival to collection)

Morning: 9:15am to 12:00pm
Afternoon: 1:15pm to 4:00pm

A relaxed paddle ideal for beginners and families. Enjoy a gentle journey along the canal with plenty of time to take in the scenery.

🕒 Full-Day Hire

Route: Brecon Basin → Talybont-on-Usk
Duration: 5–6 hours
Distance: Approx. 8 miles
Price: From £55 per person

Hire Time:

9:15am to 4:00pm (arrival to collection)

A longer adventure for those wanting to explore further along the canal. Stop at Pencelli halfway for a break — perfect for a pub lunch or a picnic — before continuing on to Talybont-on-Usk.

Looking for a Multi-Day Trip?

We offer overnight canoe hire on the River Wye, starting from Hay-on-Wye. Available from 2-4 Days.

⚠️ Important Information

A minimum of 2 people is required per booking
Minimum age to make a booking: 18 years
The correct adult-to-child ratios must be followed
Customers should be comfortable undertaking a short portage and assisting with moving their boat where required. Consider this if hiring with children.
If you are booking with children under 12 years old, a minimum of 2 adults is required for safety and to manage the carrying of boats around the lock.

* If you are planning to paddle with children, please ensure you are confident in your ability to manage their safety on the water. See the adult-to-child ratio section for full details.

Guided canoe trips are also available and may be a more suitable option for families with young children or less experienced paddlers.

👨‍👩‍👧 Adult-to-Child Ratios

Minimum age for canoe hire: 8 years
Minimum age for sit-on-top kayak hire: 12 years

To ensure the safety of all participants, the following ratios apply:

Children Aged 8–11

Must paddle in the same canoe as a responsible adult.
Minimum of 2 adults per booking.
Be aware there is a lock portage on the route, where boats must be lifted and carried around the lock.

Children Aged 12–15

May paddle in a separate canoe or kayak.
Must be accompanied by a responsible adult on the water.

Young People Aged 16–17

May paddle independently as part of a supervised group.
At least one responsible adult (18+) must be present and participating in the activity.

When booking with children, please ensure you are confident in your ability to supervise them both on the water and during the lock portage. If you are unsure whether your group meets the required ratios, please contact us before booking and we will be happy to advise.

  I had a great time canoeing/kayaking with the family. The canal route was pretty calm and quiet and is appropriate for beginners.
The staff at Black Mountain Adventure were all so friendly and nice from check-in, induction and pick-up.

A great activity centre with excellent staff who are knowledgeable and give great local advice. The half day canoe trip down. The canal is amazingly peaceful, we only saw two boats the entire time. You get to port across a lock and also go over an aqueduct so it’s an interesting journey and very easy going. Tried to stop off at Honeys cafe afterwards as heard great things but it was queued out of the door and we were on the clock so maybe next time!

 Verified Great kayak experience
We visited and hired kayaks for half a day, we were given a route to follow, as we were not familiar with the area was really helpful as opposed to just trying to find a route. The entire team were all very helpful, informative and genuinely interested in what we had been up to. They gave us all the advice and safety info we needed and helped us all into our kayaks. The journey was just perfect, gave enough time to take a calm pace so we could take in all the sights, such as the wildlife and the canal boats.  recommends THIS PLACE IS A MUST-GO! AND WE WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK!!

Yesterday we tried out Black Mountain Adventures, kayaking down the River Wye. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with a warm, friendly smile (sadly we didn’t catch her name, but she was fab!). She talked us through everything clearly and gave us loads of useful information before we set off.

Next, we were greeted by Mick and his team, who kitted us out with wetsuits and explained everything in detail. Big shout-out as well to the other guys working alongside Mick – everyone was fantastic. At the starting point, Mick went through everything again and instantly put us at ease. You can tell how much passion he has for his job – it really shines through!

We booked this as a unique and adventurous date day, and it was absolutely perfect. We both loved it and are already planning our next trip back!

  First time canoeing and it was AWESOME! Made all the better by the friendly staff at the centre. Cannot recommend Black Mountain enough for anyone wanting to use their services and have a great adventure.

Canoe and kayak hire is available as either a half-day or full-day session. The times for each hire slot are listed below. Please note that these times include check-in, equipment fitting, and transport to and from the canal.

MINIMUM AGE	8 years (adult:child ratios apply)
ADULT:CHILD RATIOS	Ages 8–13: Must have at least 1 adult in same boat Ages 14-15: Can paddle without sharing a boat with an adult, but must be accompanied by a responsible adult on the water.
SESSION TIMES (Arrivals to Farewells)	Full Day – 9:15am to 4:00pm Morning – 9:15am to 12:00pm Afternoon – 1:15pm to 4:00pm
ARRIVAL POINT	All customers are to arrive at the Black Mountain Adventure Centre at the specified session time.
TRIP ROUTE	The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal Full Day – Brecon to Talybont-on-Usk Half Day – Brecon to Storehouse Bridge
WHAT’S PROVIDED	Buoyancy Aid Paddle & Canoe / Sit-on-Top Kayak Transport to/from the water Drybags & Storage Drums can be hired for additional £3 on the day
WHAT TO WEAR	Please wear suitable outdoor clothing, including: Warm, comfortable clothing such as sportswear Trainers or secure footwear (no flip flops) Change of clothes in case of any unplanned swims Hat and sunscreen (in warmer months) Please come prepared for the weather on the day. Be aware that this activity takes place on the water where capsizes may happen. Please prepare accordingly.
