The one Star award is a flat water award and the fundamental starting point of those wishing to become paddlers, giving a basic introduction to Kayaking or Canoeing.

Craft
To obtain this award an assessment is undertaken in a kayak or canoe (any style craft).

Pre-requisites
Should be confident in water and able to swim, this is desirable but not essential.
Venue
Sheltered Waters
Part A- Personal Paddling Skills
Lifting, carrying and launching, forward paddling, steering, returning to bank.
Part B- Rescue Skills
Capsize, swim and self rescue
Part C- Safety, Leadership & Group Skills
Personal risk management, awareness of others, evidence of a journey (this will be done on the day)
Part D- Theory
Questions on equipment, safety, assess, planning, environment, hypothermia.

Change of clothes, towel, sutable foot weir such as trainers or neoprene boots

About the day!

Once on the water we will cover the BCU syllabus
Lifting/Carrying of craft:-looking at safe moving and handling techniques.
Forward Paddling:- covering good posture, rotation of body, maintaining direction and observation.
Steering of craft:- Turning the craft left and right, maintaining a forward movement,tracking, rudder strokes & reverse paddling.
Returning to bank:- Practicing getting in and out of craft.
Rescue Skills:- Capsize and be rescued or swim to bank.
Emptying Boats:- Ways to safely empty boats on the shore.
Safety, Leadership & Group Skills:- Personal risk management, awareness and responsibility to others, communication and leadership skills.
Theory:- Looking at equipment, general safety, hypothermia, first aid, assess and the environment.

The afternoon will involve a river trip to put your skills into practice improving your technique and skills along the way. We will also be looking at leadership on the river, hazards, and group control.
Towards the end will be the Wet Stuff! where you will need to capsize your kayak and swim to the bank, we will then cover safe emptying of the kayak.

At the end of the day a debrief and discussions

 

These Fun Days are great to mix with our other activities such as High Level Ropes, Climbing Tower, Canoeing, Clay Shooting, Archery Orienteering etc
